How is food grown and raised in the United States? Farmers and ranchers wished we knew. According to a recent nationwide survey, 86 percent of American farmers say the average consumer knows little or nothing about how food in the United States is cultivated and produced.
And what do consumers wish to know about how their food is grown and raised? They identified these top three topics: the effect of pesticides, fertilizers and antibiotics on food; where food comes from; and the proper care of livestock and poultry.
So the two groups did what Americans do. They had a town hall meeting and invited folks from across the nation to the discussion: family farmers and ranchers, agricultural college deans, school nutrition professionals and food industry watchdogs.
