STATE OF PLAY: Wednesday will bring Capitol Hill collisions on global warming, offshore drilling and the Energy Department’s embattled loan guarantee program.

Here’s what’s ahead:

In the Senate, the Environment and Public Works Committee will convene a hearing about climate science. Chairwoman Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) has noted that the hearing has long been in the works.

But its arrival coincides with this summer’s heatwaves and other violent weather, topics likely to surface at the hearing.

Climate legislation remains dead for now on Capitol Hill. The hearing, however, should feature colorful clashes. Boxer is a top Senate advocate for curbing emissions that the vast majority of scientists say are heating up the planet.
