Mitt Romney took a last-minute trip to Louisiana Friday to tour parts of the state damaged by Hurricane Issac earlier this week.

The Republican presidential nominee was scheduled to campaign with his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan in Virginia following Thursday night’s conclusion of the Republican convention in Tampa. Instead, he spent the afternoon speaking with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and federal and city officials in hard-hit Jefferson Parrish.

While in the town of Jean Lafitte, Romney spoke privately with first responders inside a city hall building surrounded by water. Residents could be seen wading and canoeing in the flooded streets.

In a brief conversation before the meeting, Jindal expressed his appreciation to Romney for visiting the region.
