Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass), who is President Obama’s nominee for Secretary of State, was the third richest member of Congress in 2011, behind only Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Tex.) and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), and Kerry currently is the wealthiest member of the Senate, according to financial disclosure statements.

The vast majority of Kerry’s holdings are part of three trusts linked with his wife Teresa Heinz-Kerry’s family fortune. Heinz-Kerry is heiress to the Heinz ketchup fortune, reportedly valued at around $1 billion.
