Does NASA have plans to farm on Mars?

According to various reports, the U.S. space agency is pondering ways to grow food on the Red Planet, part of a much larger project to land humans on Mars by 2030.

To establish a reliable base for human settlement on the Red Planet, the first astronauts may also need the ability to grow various crops for survival. While it may be possible to grow crops in the Martian soil, those tasked with growing food will likely face a daunting challenge. Preliminary soil samples collected by NASA’s Mars rover show an arid desert that will likely have to be tilled and cultivated if astronauts stand any chance of growing even the simplest of food items.
