Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Tuesday afternoon confirmed plans to bring the bipartisan energy efficiency bill sponsored by Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) to the Senate floor this week.

But while Reid’s remarks in the Capitol signal the bill’s years-long journey to reach the Senate floor will finally end, the guts of the debate and votes aren’t expected until after lawmakers return from their August recess in September.

Shaheen told reporters in the Capitol on Tuesday that the schedule will provide time for negotiations on amendments to the bill, which contains a slew of provisions to improve energy conservation in commercial buildings, factories and the federal government.
