The Interior and Energy Departments are vowing new joint efforts to improve offshore oil-and-gas drilling safety through a “memorandum of collaboration” unveiled Friday.

It’s designed to help boost deployment of safer technologies and practices in the industry, guide Energy Department R&D efforts, and implement recommendations in reports and studies that followed the 2010 BP disaster.

Interior’s Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) is the federal government’s lead drilling safety regulator. The Energy Department and its national labs, meanwhile, have relevant R&D and technical experience, the nonbinding memorandum notes.
