The free-market Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) is channeling the spirit – or at least the music – of the late left-wing folksinger Woody Guthrie in a campaign that promotes natural gas exports.
CEI released a music video set to Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” that pokes fun at Dow Chemical Co., the manufacturing giant that’s lobbying for constraints on export levels.
CEI’s version, called “This Gas is Dow’s Gas,” has lyrics like this:
Of course I know well, that blocking exports
Cheats the workers, who produce the resource
That’s not my problem, I want a subsidy
This gas belongs to Dow and me
It’s a natural windfall, a common bounty
It’s not really, anyone’s property
So we’ll just hog it, and they’ll still frack abundantly
Plunder will grow the GDP
CEI, a think tank and advocacy group, says there’s a serious message behind the satirical video and song.
