Iran’s new president was greeted by protesters who threw tomatoes, eggs and shoes at his car after his historic conversation with President Obama, NBC reports.

Hassan Rouhani returned Saturday from his trip to New York for the UN General Assembly. Obama announced Friday that he had talked to Rouhani on the phone in the first direct talks between leaders of the two countries since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

The violent response from “dozens of protesters” lasted “less than a minute,” according to NBC, but demonstrated the political pitfalls for Rouhani as he seeks a diplomatic solution to the standoff over its alleged nuclear weapons program.
