The U.S. natural gas infrastructure has far more leaks, allowing more of the potent greenhouse gas methane into the air than federal authorities have previously reported.

A study released by Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Thursday, revealed that while natural gas emits less carbon dioxide during combustion than other fossil fuels, the potential for leaks from the nation’s infrastructure put a damper on its “climate benefits.”

President Obama gave a big hat tip to natural gas in his State of the Union speech in January, crediting it as one of the top factors in bringing the U.S. closer to energy independence for the first time in decades.
