No doubt about the biggest winner in Sunday’s $2 million The American rodeo.

Bareback rider Richmond Champion of The Woodlands earned $100,000 first-place money along with a $1 million bonus for coming from the qualifying ranks to win at the world’s largest and richest one-day rodeo at AT&T Stadium.

The top 10 competitors in the standings qualified along with nine exemptions for legends of the sport. Five other berths per event were open for those willing to go through a qualifying process.

Champion was third coming out of the opening round and posted a score of 90 in the finals riding Assault.

Bareback was the first of seven events. Had another qualifier won one of the subsequent six, Champion would have shared the million. That led to some anxious moments.

Now he has another worry.
