Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced on Wednesday that U.S. troops returning from Ebola missions in West Africa will be quarantined — kept in supervised isolation — for 21 days, even though they won’t have any direct contact with Ebola patients.

But civilian doctors and nurses who do have direct contact with Ebola patients are not subject to mandatory quarantine under federal guidelines, although some states do require it.
