Commentary by National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson

I disagree with a recent opinion piece (“Farm Bill debate underway: NCBA says livestock title needs to go,” Aug. 13, 2011) by National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) that stated that the livestock title should be removed from the 2012 Farm Bill. My organization calls for the livestock title to remain in the next farm bill and the proposed GIPSA rule to be finalized and implemented as soon as possible.

The GIPSA rule will bring fairness to the livestock and poultry market, which has long been tilted against farmers and ranchers. The rule will prevent packers from engaging in unfair trade practices to drive livestock producers out of business
