Wow he is really out of the government loop, wanting people to live their own lives….
Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has weighed in on this year’s political scrap over the Confederate flag – and says he comes out on the side of ‘freedom’ from ‘the PC police.’
The African-American retired surgeon endorsed the idea of Americans flying the Confederate flag on their own property, calling the controversy over the flag ‘old news’ that has already been discussed ‘way too much.’
Acknowledging that the flag is a symbol of hate to many black Americans, Carson said it matters more that U.S. citizens don’t feel pressure to conform to political correctness when it comes to their own home.
Speaking at a rally on Monday with NASCAR driving legend Richard Petty and in an interview with the Associated Press on Tuesday, Carson downplayed the significance of the issue,
‘I am not opposed to anybody doing whatever they want to do on their private property,’ Carson told reporters after a campaign event at a Baptist church in Winston-Salem, N.C.
‘We’ve already talked about the Confederate flag issue way too much,’ he continued. ‘But as a general principle, people can do whatever they want on their private property. That’s one of the basic tenets of freedom in America.’
Carson has said in past interviews that a neighbor of his once flew the Confederate flag ‘as a message’ to his family after they moved into the neighborhood – but later took it down after other families put up American flags to ‘shame’ the man.
NASCAR has asked fans to stop flying the flag at races, even in Deep South states and stock-car racing strongholds such as North Carolina. Petty, notably, has dismissed controversy over the flag as ‘a passing fancy.’
Carson compared the flag at one point to the Nazi swastika symbol, but maintained he is ‘standing up to the PC police.’
‘Swastikas are a symbol of hate for some people, too. And yet they still exist in museums and places like that,” Carson said.
