A true hero….
Neither lapping flames nor billowing smoke — nor being on vacation — stopped this intrepid NYPD cop from coming to the rescue of two people trapped in a burning school bus Thursday afternoon on Long Island.
Off-duty transit cop Christopher Canale was enjoying a vacation day with his wife and 5-year-old son when they spotted the yellow minibus engulfed in flames along the Long Island Expressway in Manorville around 3:30 p.m.
“The first thing I’m thinking is there’s children inside the bus,” Canale, 33, recalled Friday at One Police Plaza. “ It was my biggest fear. I have two kids of my own.”
Canale pulled onto the shoulder of the expressway’s westbound lane, dashed over to the bus, and threw open the door.
Through the acrid smoke, Canale “heard someone screaming on the front of the bus. The driver was pinned inside the bus.”
