not what anyone wanted to hear….
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, told “Fox News Sunday” that he has a “high degree of confidence” that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) put a bomb on the Russian plane that crashed in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.
“I have a high degree of confidence it was,” McCaul said when asked what the likelihood was that it was a terrorist attack. “It’s been my gut all along as we looked at the facts, the region itself, the fact that they want to hit the Russians.”
Metrojet Flight 9268 crashed on Oct. 31, killing all 224 people aboard. The crash is considered the worst civil aviation disaster in Russian history. A branch of the Islamic State based in the Sinai Peninsula, where the plane landed, has claimed responsibility for the crash. The cause of the crash has not been officially determined.
“I think the latest evidence we have is the black box recording itself, which indicates that there was an explosion on the aircraft,” said McCaul.
“When you couple that with the satellite technology, this flash of heat on the airplane, the fact that ISIS has declared war on Russia, this was a Russian plane headed for Russia, in addition to the U.S. and U.K. intelligence that we have received, I think all indicators are pointing to the fact that this was ISIS putting a bomb on an airplane,” he said.
