Has the GOP base found its Mr. Right?

Another round of polling suggests that Rick Santorum may be on his way to consolidating conservative support nationally in the fight for the Republican presidential nomination. That’s bad news for Newt Gingrich, and potentially even worse news for Mitt Romney, who has benefited from a secondary fight among his GOP rivals to be his main alternative.

A new CBS News/New York Times poll shows that Santorum now leads Romney 30%-27% among Republican primary voters nationwide. Romney’s standing is statistically unchanged, while Santorum has surged 14 points since a January survey, conducted between the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries.
