The U.S. Government Accountability Office last week recommended that USDA provide more specific guidance on the license-approval requirements for vaccines to combat E. coli O157:H7, and made other observations on reduction of E. coli-related illness. The report, titled “Preslaughter Interventions Could Reduce E. coli in Cattle,” also recommends USDA explore practices other countries use to reduce Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) in cattle and consider whether those practices could help U.S. efforts.
