Earlier this year, Arizona Senator John McCain took some hits for his stance, along with a couple of other Republican senators, against the Obama administration’s decision to give grants to small farmers. McCain, along with Saxby Chambliss of Georgia and Pat Roberts of Kansas, objected to the USDA’s “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” program, which offers aid to local producers.

American families and rural farmers are hurting in today’s economy,” the senators wrote in a letter to the USDA, “and it’s unclear to us how propping up the urban locavore markets addresses their needs.”
