In the film classic “The Princess Bride,” the villainous Vizzini offers a few definitive blunders: “Never get involved in a land war in Asia” and “never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line.” Perhaps there’s one to add that’s more Washington-centric: “Never let your sworn enemy write the rules.”

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS, not affiliated with similarly named pet shelters) and the United Egg Producers, a trade group, have teamed up to push an amendment to the Farm Bill that would for the first time get the government involved in specifying housing sizes for livestock.

Essentially, it’s putting PETA in charge of farms. That’s about as wise as hiring a Yankees fan as a Red Sox manager.
